Taken from the roof of Le Corbusier's Mill Owners Building, this highlights one of the central recurring themes of life in India: contrast.
In this case, some pretty fancy hotels, surrounded at their feet by squatter developments on the riverbank. They'll be moved on soon, as new luxury housing is planned for the river front.

All the streets in the old town of Ahmedabad have very specific functions. This one featured nothing but women sat in little shelters from the sun and dirt, busily engaged in traditional block-printing. I can't begin to describe how incredibly quickly these women work - they really fly through each piece of fabric, simply flinging them onto a heap in the road when they're done!

It's almost finished, actually, but Sabhir thought we might be interested in seeing this large old house in one of the pols being turned into a museum. I'm not sure what the museum is going to actually house, but this new lightweight timbner stair enclosure was a lovely contrast to the older building behind.

...which is understandable, given the nature of traffic in Ahmedabad.

I love the doors, and I love the bench. Heck, I love this whole building.
Probably the nicest Corb building we saw on the trip, and certainly the only of his buildings which I've liked instantly (the others have grown on me through the experience of visiting them), the Mill Owners Building was basically a series of concrete-and-stone-defined semi-internal shaded spaces surrounding a large, oval conference room. Spaces in which the members could 'mill' about, I guess! (fnar fnar)
Anyway, my tutors were doing a project which involved various temporary artistic installations in the building, so I accompanied them and spent a happy afternoon photographing, chatting to the few staff who were milling around, and enjoying the spaces both inside the building and the views from the rooftop.
Here's the location, and I cannot recommend it enough.

Or, as the excellent Mr Dent once said... "I'm game. We'll see who rusts first!"
This was on the banks of the river in Ahmedabad - taklen from the rooftop of the Mill Owners Building. Here's the location, and I cannot recommend it enough.
I think those are red kites above it, by the way. The circle the town all afternoon in their dozens - it's amazing.

Hand-made, in the age of the machine. Brilliant. I like the colour of the peeling paint, too.

This is a model of the building in which it is hung - the model is made of a fine silk gauze-y material, so has a rather floppy element in contrast with the often brutal concrete with which most of the actual building is described.
