Another climbing composite, taken here. It would be fun to do this showing every route available up this cliff, but I think it might take a while!

Happy American Independence Day, y'all!
In other news, it's our first wedding anniversary today - minus one! Yup, one year today we tie the knot - how exciting!

It worked, too! Well, for a little while, anyway. Even after it was submerged it sort of formed a nifty donut shape.

Another completely posed self portrait.
Well, I had to do it - everyone else was carefully not getting into my shot!
Daveybot posted a photo:
Completely posed, of course, but I didn't notice the shdows untill later when Alison pointed them out.

This is taken up near the highest point of Trail Ridge Road, the highest paved linking road in the USA. At over 12,000 feet it plays merry hell with you fuel consumption, and we kept stalling. Also they advise people with breathing problems not to go up there - well, we couldn't resist!
A bit of hiking here in Rocky Mountain National Park, and a day in Denver with Jamen's brother, and then we drove non-stop (a flat tyre in Kansas notwithstanding) to DC in time to finish off our trip at the capital's July 4th celebrations.

One of my favourite national parks from the whole trip, this. Arches National Park (nps link, wiki link) is just full of amazing natural rock features, including the largest span natural arch in the world.
This isn't it - this is just normal. You can just about make me out standing next to it.

I'd felt like a bit of a wally not having a hat in Wyoming, so I picked one up at the rodeo. And boy was it useful when we got down into the South West!
Daveybot posted a photo:
I'd vaguely intended to try recreating the cover of the U2 album - I'd recently acquired a decent cowboy hat at the rodeo back in Wyoming, after all - but we didn't see all that many of these.

Soda Butte Creek still holds the 'best place name of the trip' title, but we liked this one too. You can read the wikipedia page (featuring another photo of this sign!) for an explanation...

Walking through the groves of these trees is a really humbling experience. Hell, the branches don't even start until over a hundred feet up, and the bark is a foot and a half thick! Interestingly, the pine cones - of which a large tree will produce as many as 11,000 in a single year - are only about two inches long.
Many more fascinating facts at the wikipedia page.

Why hadn't anyone told me how beautiful the Oregon coastline was before?! We stopped so often just to hop down onto beach after beautiful beach. Also I got to see pelicans - woohoo!
More importantly, as I'm reminded by n0nnahs below, this is the place where One Eyed Willy finally set sail from his pirate cave in The Goonies. Much more successful than our efforts to re-enact Close Encounters Of The Third Kind a week or so earlier!
Daveybot posted a photo:
We ducked down just into Oregon before we saw the Pacific proper, and it was quite a moment - no more West! So we turned South...

This little guy was very scamper-prone, but for some reason he didn't mind being held by Shamus at all - just had a little nap instead.
It photographs, it listens, and it monkeys with the best of em. Truly - is there anything the Daveybot does not do?!
